For registering to vote, you need to fill in Form 6 and submit it to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of your assembly constituency. Once you complete the process, your name would be included in the electoral roll and you would be allowed to vote.

Voting is an individual’s right in India and no one can deny it to any citizen as India is a democracy and is subjected to certain rules and regulations set by the state. In order to be part of this democratic process, the first step is to be registered as a voter. For this, a person, irrespective of creed, color, sex and religion need to be above the age of 18 years and submit a completed Form-6 to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of the assembly constituency of the area. After this your name will be added in the electoral roll as a voter. There are various ways by which Form-6 can be submitted. These are:

1. Online application

Step 1 Log on to www.eci.nic.in or the website of Chief Electoral Officer (CEOs) of the state where you ordinarily resides. Click on tab ‘Online Voter Registration’.

Step 2 Sign up to obtain a username and password.

Step 3 Upload one passport-size colour photo in the space mentioned.

Step 4 Upload the age and residence proof. In case you are unable to upload, the Booth Level Officer (BLO) may collect the documents from your house.  

2. By post

Step 1 Download Form-6 from www.eci.nic.in or your state CEO website. Fill it in and attach the required documents.

Step 2 Post it to the voter’s centre of your constituency.

3. Delivered by hand

Step 2 Give the completed form to the Voters Registration Centre of your constituency or to the BLO.

Visit www.nvsp.in website and upload your documents.

Documents needed for updating your name:

  • One passport-size photograph
  • Identity proof: A birth certificate, passport, driving licence, PAN Card or high school mark sheet can work.
  • Address proof: A ration card, driving license passport, or a phone or electricity bill can be uploaded.

Once you submit your application, you will receive an email containing all details of your updated application which can be tracked through the given application ID. The voter ID card will be issued with a month’s time.
