Imminent Polls – Rs. 540 Crore worth suspect cash, alcohol and drugs seized across India

Since the parliamentary election was announced by the Election Commission of India a couple of weeks back, an official data has shown that suspect cash, illegal liquor and drugs that are worth around Rs. 540 crore have been seized across India.

As the cleanup procedure continues just before the Lok Sabha elections, the state of Tamil Nadu has been ranked first in terms of the maximum amount of seized illegal inducements, which are suspected to have been kept in advance to be utilized as bribes to voters. The seized cash and illegal addictives from Tamil Nadu amounts to Rs. 107.24 crore, which is followed by Uttar Pradesh Rs.104.53 crore, Andhra Pradesh Rs. 103.4 crore and Punjab Rs. 92.8 crore. These states are followed by Karnataka where the amount of seized inducements and cash is worth Rs. 26.53 crore; Maharashtra Rs. 19.11 crore; and Telangana Rs. 8.2 crore.

According to an Election Commission official, the total value of all the seized items and cash cumulatively is worth as much as Rs. 539.99 crore.

The parliamentary polls were declared by the Election Commission on 10th of March, and according to data that was updated till 25th March, a cumulative amount of Rs. 143.37 crore suspect cash, Rs. 89.64 crore worth of liquor and drugs worth Rs. 131.75 crore, gold and other precious metals worth Rs. 162.93 crore and other freebies worth Rs. 12.20 crore have been detained in all the mentioned states.

The Election Commission of India has positioned hundreds of expenditure observers, stationary and mobile surveillance teams and general observers across the nation in order to keep a check on the flow of cash and other illegal things that are used to gratify the voters and ensure the most possible fair polls in the country.

The 7 phase elections will be commencing from 11th April, 2019, while the counting of votes will start from 23rd of May.
