“If you are a chowkidar then tell me where is my son Najeeb?” this was asked by a mother for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who claimed to be ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar (I am a watchman too)’. This has become a hit campaign on social media.

Najeeb Ahmad (27), a student of MSc Biotechnology is missing since 2016. In this regard, Fatima Nafees tweeted that “If you are a chowkidar then tell me where is my son Najeeb?  Why Abvp goons not arrested? Why three toped agencies failed to find my son?” the tweet further said.

Najeeb had gone missing following a fight that happened the previous night with some students allegedly affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He went missing from the JNU hostel since October 15, 2016. Since PM Narendra Modi claimed that he is the watchman of the nation, Fatima raised this question about her son’s whereabouts.

Facebook and right-wing handles shared an old picture claiming that Najeeb had joined Islamic State (IS), in response to the tweet from Najeeb’s mother Fatima Nafis. The Twitter handle @FatimaNafis1, which is Najeeb’s mother’s not only tweeted about her son’s whereabouts but also asked why the “goons” of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad were not arrested and the reason behind the failure of the top three agencies to find her son. The mother’s plea went viral almost immediately and the backlash was quite predictable.

There was also a post made by the page Modi Mania on Facebook which read: “Do you recognise him? This is our Najeeb…the one from JNU… the one who was part of the Azaadi gang. “The favourite of the Communists. He has been directly placed in ISIS after JNU. He is sending Rahul and Kejriwal a salute from Syria.” This post was shared over 1,000 times. The photograph of Najeeb was available on the internet from 2015 countering the claim that it was clicked since Najeeb’s disappearance in 2016.

There is no clarity till today about where Najeeb and was on the verge being declared “untraced” by the CBI in its closure report.
