Online frauds have become relatively common these days. Fraudsters have found new and innovative means of duping innocent users of their hard earned money. And now in yet another case, a Lucknow based man was duped of Rs 4 lakh after he called the customer care executive of a food delivery app.

The incident, according to a report by Times Now, took place on Wednesday in Lucknow where a Gomti Nagar based man ordered food from a food delivery app. When the man, whose name has been changed to Aman, found the quality of the food that had been delivered to him unsatisfactory, he decided to the customer care executives of the food delivery app.

He looked for the phone number of the food delivery app’s customer care executive on the internet and decided to call them. On calling the number a man picked up the call and he introduced himself as the executive from the food delivery app. He then asked Aman to download the app and add details of his savings bank account into the downloaded application.

The victim, Aman, followed the steps of the customer care executive. During this process he received a one time password (OTP). The delivery executive then asked him to enter the OTP in the app saying that doing so would get all his money back. In simple words, on entering the OTP his money would be refunded.

As soon as he entered theOTP, he got a message which stated that a sum of Rs 4 lakh had been deducted from his bank account. Soon after he filed a complaint with the local police station. “We are taking the help of cyber cell to trace the miscreant,” Amit Kumar Dubey, SHO, Gomtinagar said in a statement to the publication.

Notably, this is not the first time that innocent people have lost money online to fraudsters. Back in August this year, a Mumbai based man was duped of Rs 96,000 as he tried to pay his electricity bill using Google Pay. During the transaction, an error occured in the app which is when he decided to contact the customer care executive. He looked for the number on the internet and decided to make the call, which was received by fraudster who posed a legitimate customer care executive. The fraudster sent him a collect request and as soon as he clicked on it, a sum of Rs 96,000 was deducted from his account.
